Nude cyclists hit the road in nothing but paint for saucy World Naked Bike Ride

The World Naked Bike Ride made a return to Cardiff on Sunday, with the streets full of cyclists stripping down to nothing but some tastefully applied body paint.

The ride is organised as part of a global protest which highlights the safety of cyclists in traffic throughout cities.

The organisers say the aim is to create awareness and highlight the issues surrounding cycling in cities, as well as over reliance on cars, reports WalesOnline

The route started at Cardiff University's lawns on Museum Avenue at 2.30pm on Sunday (July 25) and went through the Civic Centre, City Centre, Cardiff Bay, St Mary Street, Pontcana and Canton before finishing at the university.

Many cyclists braved the route completely naked while others were partially covered up.

Most cyclists used body paint and decorated their bikes with posters and other accessories.

It is not illegal to be naked in a public space in the UK, but it does become an offence if it can be proved the person stripped off with the intention of upset and shock.

The event was first started in 2004, with London and Brighton attracting the most cyclists in the UK, with more than 1,000 people taking part each year.

The message to cyclists who take part in these events is "as bare as you dare", with nudity not compulsory.

The key messages focus on cyclist safety and reliance on cars in city centre, however they also protest against dependency on fossil fuels and impacts of global warming.

People of all ages take part, with those involved tending to wear more paint than clothes during the mass ride.

The global bike ride is hosted in cities such as Madrid, Mexico City and Toronto, with Portland, Oregon attracting on average the most cyclists.

The American city had 10,000 people strip down to their birthday suits in protest in 2015.
